True Togetherness! |
And the rest of the merry band |
My first involvement with
the event was when the runners covered the Anderson Amble route as part of
their preparation. Sally, Corrina, Lee
and Mike H ran the course from
For
In
John met up with Sue, Steph and Mike at
check-point 7, where the 2 runs converged and Sue was having a tyre change, and
completed the last stretch with them. At that point Ian asked me to wait at the
check-point to support Sally, Corrina and Mike H while he waited for Lee who
had dropped behind. In the event Sally
powered through with barely a pause, while Corrina, running with her new
friend, followed shortly after. Mike H
was taking it a bit easier by this time, but still determined to finish. Lee recovered after taking an isotonic drink
and made a storming finish saying that the drink made him feel like the Duracell
Bunny. All our runners were delighted
with their performances and enjoyed the refreshments provided by the
organisers.
Chris Foord
Having watched and
supported Mike, Sally and Lee last year round the Marlborough Downs 20m
Challenge, this year it was our turn to have a go. Mike Foord, Steph Miller and
myself started an hour and a half after the 33 milers,
John Western, Sally Lovell, Corrina Skinner, Michael Hall and Lee Miller,
straight up a field and into a beautiful bluebell wood that seemed to go on for
ages, the scent was wonderful. It was then on over downland and fields of
cowslips with far reaching views over the English countryside. No car fumes or
traffic, in fact the only other people were runners or walkers. We stopped at
the various well marshalled checkpoints and topped up with water, squash, tea,
jelly babies, fudge, biscuits etc. and that was without our own special backup
by way of Chris Foord and Gary Lancaster (he was to be running with us until he
broke his nose on a Tuesday night run) We were able to change our kit if
necessary although we were lucky with the weather and didn’t need any clean or
dry clothing. A change of shoes was welcome on the last leg past Avebury Ring
and through some unusual rock strewn terrain then round the horse race course
(training gallops!) on a gravel track where we could see the roofs of
Marlborough in the distance. We overtook a fellow experienced lady runner who
informed us it was just along a field and then down a track to home.
Fortunately she omitted to tell us about the steep hill but we overcame and
finished at Marlborough Leisure Centre in fine form with more than enough left
in the tank to sprint to the car for a change of kit. We were given an
excellent pasta meal and Steph and I had a most relaxing swim feeling really
very pleased with ourselves. We’d done it! (Mike Foord caught up with John
Western (first of our 33 milers and finished with him just half a minute ahead
of us)

SaabSalomon Turbo-X Trial
On Sunday 15th May, Danny Blackman and I set
off for Bordon, Hampshire to take part in the SaabSalomon Turbo-X Trail. It's a
10 mile trial run, through an Army Barracks, and for me, it was a race in to
the unknown! I'd never taken part in anything like this and I was about to find
out what I'd let myself in for!
We arrived in plenty of time and found ourselves
surrounded by some rather athletic looking, adventure running dudes! Bandana's
seemed to be standard issue!
We set off at
Over the next three miles or so, the race continued
through woods, fields, water and loads of mud!
Between 8 and 9 miles, we arrived at the Turbo-X
Extreme mile! This is kind of a race within a race, and covers the toughest
mile of the course. It basically consists of running through a pretty rancid
bog! But as well as that, there are two very steep hills that we had to crawl
up and a stream crossing. The stream was awesome fun! We found ourselves thigh
deep in mud and waste deep in water as we crossed it! Boy,
was it tough to pull yourself out of the mud. I remember looking back and
seeing Dan's hands and head peering over the back as he tried to pull himself
out!! We somehow completed the mile in 7m 12s! I have no idea how we did it?
After that, we completed the last mile through
woods and across a field. We were very tired, very muddy and very wet! But
also, massively happy!
We crossed the finish line in 1h 15m 11s, finishing
in 48th and 49th place, out of 258 competitors. Dan beat me. again!
It was a great race, amazing fun, and I can't wait
to do it again! If you don't find getting a little wet and muddy, I strongly
recommend you give Trail running a go. We could put a Hastings Runners team
together! You'll love it!!!

Fellsman 61 Miles
Just a short note to post a provisional
result for me for the Fellsman - 61miles -ish race and 11000 feet ascent (and
descent) around the Yorkshire Dales last weekend ( 10-11/5/08). I managed it in
22hrs 45mins, nearly 2 hours faster than last year. This year the heat was an
absolute killer- not a breath of wind even on the top of the fells, and we were
in t-shirts still at
It was one of the most brutal races I have
done due to the heat - even worse than the
I was actually 1hr 30mins slower on the
first half due to the heat this year, compared to last year, but by not having
driving rain during the night stage peat bog, managed not to get lost and
gained enough time for a PB overall, and even managed a run into the finish.
Most of the night stage was a hike/ slog.
Hopefully those HR members who went to
Marlborough for the 34mile race in the same series will want a greater
challenge next year, and will join me for one of the toughest UK races - 2nd
weekend in May - The 47th Fellsman!
